Foraging for Wild Asparagus, Edible Mushrooms and Personal Sanity in Idaho at Springtime
This is my kind of hiking!
Springtime in Southeast Idaho. Winter-dormant nature nurtures itself back to life — just like I’m trying to do myself right now. One day the first buds, then slowly over the next few days and weeks, with increasing warmth, everything is alive once again. Positively electric with an array of colorful flowers and multitudes of shades of green leaves!
How does nature go about getting all this done so easily every year in the northern regions? True magic, it seems. Or maybe not. Maybe it’s all indeed just as difficult and painful for nature as it is for us. Struggling and constantly fighting for strength and mere survival.
Walking into and becoming one with nature heals. My mind has often been scattered lately and stress from life surrounds me. But out amongst the farms, forests and backwoods of Idaho, I suddenly find myself feeling a great weight lift off my shoulders — just as if earth’s greatest guardian spirits are already there hanging out and exhaling hope. The world appears daunting and frantic no more but simple, natural and free, like moss on a fallen tree.
