Hiking The Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado
While this park does not have lots of trails, it has tons of sand
Last month, my eldest son and I traveled to Great Sand Dunes National Park to hike. We were only going to be in the park for a day, so we wanted to take advantage of what we could.
Getting on the road by 9 a.m. was easy. We stayed in the town of Salida, Colorado, about an hour and a half away from the park. As we drove, we felt more remote and removed from civilization. We crossed vast swaths of ranch land with horses and cattle roaming freely on the level ground that abutted the mountains.
Pretty. As we drove, we talked about what it would be like to live on one of those remote ranches. Hard.
From afar, we noted an arid landscape. It was unlike the Mojave or Sonoran Deserts with their stately vegetation. It was, as far as we could see, just sand.
This would be an interesting trip, as both of us like trees and plants, as well as our National Parks. We had both researched the park and knew what we were getting into. Sand. Lots of it.
