When the pilot made the announcement they’d be wrapping up cabin service early for our arrival into Miami International Airport it was hardly surprising. I realized then and there they’d been hauling ass across the Caribbean Sea ahead of the expected storm. And rightfully so.

Flight attendants scurried about and collected trash, including my now empty can of ginger ale, as I folded up my copy of Hemispheres magazine, where I’d been enjoying reading about travels to Mallorca, Spain and doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles in the back. I stowed the magazine into my Panama bag under the seat in front of me.

After landing, getting through immigration and fetching my hot pink suitcase containing everything but the kitchen sink — no packing light for me — the airport was becoming a mess with rain-soaked travelers. Every time I took a peek outside, even though it was the middle of the day, it might as well have been midnight the sky was so overcast and hazy with rain.
