In this Medieval Town, Christmas is Always in Season

How we found Christmas cheer during the pandemic in Germany’s best-preserved medieval walled town.

Imagine a medieval town, where Christmas is in season throughout the year. That place is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of 28 towns on the Romantic Road, which is among Germany’s oldest and most popular holiday routes.

Ziko and I visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 2021 during the pandemic. While the gloom of the pandemic had diminished the joy of celebration everywhere, it was still alive at Rothenburg ob der Tauber and was made more real by its subdued intensity. The absence of crowds also gave us a chance to explore the town’s medieval charm at our own pace.

Yet we did have to follow complicated Covid restrictions to get there, which had its challenges. But once we did, we found there was no better place to have spent the Christmas of 2021.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber sprung up around the castle built by the Counts of Comburg-Rothenburg in the twelfth century on the plateau above the Tauber River…
