If you’re planning a trip to Thailand soon, well, you‘ve come to the right place.

But if not, no worries.

Whether you have a trip planned, always dreamed of visiting, feel like reminiscing on the time you did, or are just curious about the country, this is still for you. You don’t have to stay glued till the last word, but there’s a good chance you’ll find parts of it interesting.

I spent 3 months in Thailand, 2 of which I was working in a Thai restaurant, with Thai-only staff. It was a pretty international area, and even though the Front of the House staff spoke English, the kitchen didn’t. Most guests were foreigners, and the few Thai customers we’d get would order in English with me. It might come as a surprise, but it was usually the stuck-up expats who’d make the order in Thai in an attempt to test me out.

Long story short, I learned some Thai. Very little, but I did. More than I learned Dutch after living 1 year in the Netherlands anyway.

And let me tell you, it’s such an interesting language.

Similar to several other Southeast Asian languages, the Thai language has a relatively straightforward verb conjugation system, with less complicated tense distinctions…
