Oaxaca City founded in 1529 is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a terrific example of Spanish colonial architecture.

Oaxaca (pronounced wahaka) is on a high mountain plateau at the foot of Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountain range.,

The climate in Oaxaca is more temperate than in the coastal beach areas of the state. When my partner, Marie, and I visited in late January the early morning hours and evenings were what could be called “sweater weather”.

OAXACA CITY

We stayed at the Tobala Hotel within walking distance of the historic center and the local market. Our room was large and comfortably furnished including a modern bathroom. Just outside our room on the second floor was a large open patio with tables and chairs where guests could gather. Best of all was the price. Our one-week stay ran less than one hundred and fifty dollars.

Whenever we arrive in a new city, we like to take one of those quick two-hour city bus tours that give you a general view of what the major sights are, and where they are located. Afterward, we return to see what is of interest at our leisure. On the tour, we learned that Oaxaca City is the birthplace of Benito Juarez, Mexico’s first indigenous president…
