Searching for Amy Winehouse in Camden Town
Touring the Camden Markets and the high price of fame
Stepping off a red double-decker bus on one of those rare days in London where the sky is bright blue and the temperature balmy, I encounter a sea of people headed in a bazillion different directions. There are the typical-looking tourists — Camden Town is tourist central in the month of August when I visited — but others sport a style of dress and mannerisms that are anything but typical. Alternative, subversive, metal heads, a handful of prima donnas, some bookish and many youths sticking out noticeably with one-of-a-kind hairdos, strange clothing, calling attention to themselves with voices that are a bit too loud with noticeable raw rebellion.
Oh yes, this is it. Camden Town is anything but run-of-the-mill. Just about anything might fly here. But it’s also a place where a person can easily get lost in the crowd, both in the figurative sense as well as the literal one, if that’s what they so choose. But it’s also a place where on rare occasions someone can break free and truly stand out.
I don’t mind getting lost in a crowd once in a while, and as I begin to wander around the sprawling and unpredictable Camden Markets I try to imagine a girl with locks of long-flowing…
