I wanted to choose one, particularly striking vista for this month’s challenge. I pored over photos, delved deep into my memoryscape, and thought about what might make the better story. Still, narrowing it down to just one has proved near impossible, so look out for some honourable mentions later on. For now though, I want to transport you to a small town in central Turkey. I usually favour jungles and forests and open water, and yet the most impressive vista I’ve ever laid eyes on is probably one of a beige undulation of jagged rocks, seen in all its glory from a hot air balloon over Göreme.

Turkey’s Cappadocia region had been on my list for a long time before I was finally able to tick it off in September 2019 — and it most certainly did not disappoint. This day didn’t actually start out quite as rosy as the above photo might suggest, though that could be partly down to our group’s collective impatience. It was the early hours of the morning, and by some miracle had managed to drag ourselves out of bed, get dressed, and meet by the coach. All except one of us. We waited and waited, time tumbling away, each second longer than the last. Alas, finally she showed up and we were on our way to the balloon site.
