Some Flora and Fauna of St. Thomas and St. John, US Virgin Islands

As an environmental educator, I am inspired by natural surroundings when I travel as much as when I am at home.

Recently, my husband and I traveled to the island of St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). We stayed for eight days and made the most of a simply extraordinary place, trying to see and do as much as we could.

That said, we tend to do things off the beaten path of most tourists. For example, when we traveled to the neighboring island of St. John by ferry, we headed to the U.S. National Park office and a nearby hiking trail that would take us to a pristine beach. Other tourists? Well, they were headed to other places — we know because they weren’t on the rugged trail with us. Tour companies and taxis picked up most to do other things. There is no judgment here — as a vacation mecca, especially in the winter months — everyone is entitled to do whatever their heart desires on a beautiful island.

Me? I like to notice the natural surroundings of where I visit when I travel. I’ve always been like this but now — now, I let it show. We like to hike and along the way, I take pictures like these below from the Lind Trail on St. John.
