Here is a link to Part 7 of my story if you haven’t read it:

As I started my previous article, on the morning of Day 14, we went to the Vatican City (the world’s smallest country, located within Rome) then we departed for Venice.

I don’t remember the details all that well, but we would have left Rome at mid-morning and we probably would have arrived in Venice in the late afternoon. Although we didn’t actually arrive in Venice itself. We would have arrived at another camping village. I have heard that accommodation in Venice itself is expensive, but we would get to see Venice on Day 15.

So we would have had some dinner, maybe socialised or partied a bit and then went to bed. I don’t quite remember, it was too long ago.

Then on Day 15, we got up, we had some breakfast, got ready to leave and then get a ride to Venice, where we would spend the day there and get a ride back at the end of the day.

Venice is an island, however there is a road connecting it to the mainland. Venice is one of those cities that is worth seeing at least once. There aren’t many other places quite like it. Here are some pictures I took while I was there:

As usual though, photos don’t do it justice. You have to be there in order to really experience it. And if I recall, there were no cars in Venice, which makes it a nice place to be, in my opinion.

I also remember being taken to some shop that sold Venetian lace. The stuff was nice, sure, but I didn’t buy anything. I did, however, wander around the city, ate some food, had some drinks, took some pictures and enjoyed the scenery. I remember that there were a lot of tourists around.

In fact, Venice seemed to be mostly just tourism and little else. I remember being told that 30% of the Roman economy was tourism. Venice would be much higher than that.

Anyone who has watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (which I have seen a number of times) might remember that part of the movie was filmed in Venice. And I vaguely recall standing where they filmed part of it.

I also remember one of my fellow travellers (from Australia) randomly running into a friend from back home (coincidentally doing another tour). I have had similar experiences before, but not on this trip.

And at the end of the day, we went back to the place where we were staying then had some dinner, did whatever we wanted to do and went to bed.

Then on Day 16, we would depart for Pag Island, Croatia, stopping at some caves in Slovenia on the way. We would stay at Pag Island, Croatia, to have a few days of “chill time” before continuing on with the tour (to see Slovenia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and the Netherlands).

So I would say that we’re over the half-way point now, and that this is probably where we go from Western Europe to Central Europe.

To be continued…
