The Best Place I’ve Been is in Lisle, Illinois
I will always appreciate the introspection it has brought to my life.
“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth. “
— Henry David Thoreau
I’ve traveled a great deal more than some, but nothing compared to others. When I think of the best place I’ve ever been, I flip through a photo book in my mind, looking for the place that invokes the best feeling. Los Angeles? Seattle? London? Amsterdam?
But then I think, where is my favorite place in the world?
And I have my answer.
In the Chicago suburbs is a town called Lisle (pronounced like ‘lie — L’) and in that town is an arboretum — an outdoor living tree museum known as The Morton Arboretum.
I loved going to the arboretum, whether 90 degrees or 9 degrees, rain, snow — whatever. It was a chance to be in nature.
I learned a lot about myself there, as cliche as it may sound. The reasons and stories I’m going to include here are just a few of many.
