Spring Break as a college student. You have to go big.

And when you’re studying abroad…You have to go bigger.

This was my thought process when I was trying to plan my Spring Break vacation this year. I knew I wanted to go somewhere different, somewhere I wouldn’t normally travel. I needed this week to stand out against the rest, which is pretty hard when “the rest” is Switzerland, Israel, Greece, etc.

So when my friend suggested that the two of us go to Tenerife, I jumped right in. I knew nothing about Tenerife, which only made me want to go more.

Tenerife is part of the Spanish-owned Canary Islands, located off the coast of northwest Africa. The island is home to Mount Teide, an active volcano, beautiful beaches and rich Canarian history.

We stayed in Tenerife for one week on the northern part of the island, further away from the more touristy spots of the south. Here are my three must-dos for visiting Tenerife.

Visit Masca

Masca is a picturesque village located on the northwest coast of the island. It is known for its stunning natural beauty, including its rugged mountain landscape, deep gorges, and lush vegetation.

Masca is also famous for its traditional Canarian architecture, with many of its houses and buildings constructed from volcanic stone. The village is popular among hikers and nature enthusiasts who come to explore the surrounding hills and valleys, as well as the nearby Masca Gorge, which is considered one of the most scenic hikes in Tenerife.

Despite its remote location, Masca has become a popular tourist destination in recent years, with several restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops catering to visitors. So of course, it’s number one on my list.

The drive to Masca can be rough…A one-lane road twists and turns up the mountain with locals speeding through curves while tourists — myself, included — anxiously grip their steering wheels.

Beware, even I, who never gets motion sickness had to pull over for a breather.

Nonetheless, Masca was beautiful. The views were breathtaking, the architecture was unlike anything I’d ever seen and the drive was certainly worth it.

Take a Trip to El Drago

El Drago is a unique and remarkable tree located in the town of Icod de los Vinos. This ancient and impressive dragon tree is estimated to be over 800 years old and stands at an impressive 18 meters tall.

The tree is surrounded by myth and legend, with locals believing it to possess mystical and healing properties. Visitors can enjoy a walk around the tree and its beautiful gardens, as well as learn about the history and culture surrounding this iconic landmark.

El Drago is a must-visit for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone looking to experience the magic of this enchanting island.

The park’s gardens also feature a cave and mesmerizing views of the surrounding city.

After leaving the park, take some time to enjoy the shops and restaurants of Icod de los Vinos!

Indulge in Seaside Seafood

Tenerife is a popular destination for seafood lovers, with a wide range of restaurants offering delicious and fresh seafood dishes that you just have to try.

Whether you prefer grilled fish, paella, or shellfish, there are plenty of options to choose from. Some of the most popular seafood dishes in Tenerife include octopus, squid, prawns, and sea bass.

Additionally, many restaurants offer traditional Canarian dishes, such as sancocho (salted fish stew) and vieja (parrot fish). With its location on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Tenerife offers some of the freshest and most delicious seafood you can find.

If you’re going to eat seafood, why not do it with a view of the sea? Visit Puerto de la Cruz and stroll along the coast to try any of the various restaurants with a view.

Of course, there is plenty more to do in Tenerife. During my week, I went to several beaches, took a dolphin-watching boat tour, and found some time to relax.

Needless to say, I think I knocked my Spring Break out of the park…not sure how I’ll top this one next year!
