Two Weeks in Würzburg: An Accidental Heritage Trip

Leaving Home

My laptop is nestled into a pile of blankets on my lap. I’m sitting on my old blue sofa with my feet up, watching the rain change to sleet out the front picture window. This is my daily scenic vista. From here, I watch the sunrise each morning with a warm cat on my lap (this morning’s was a particularly vibrant fuchsia — impending snowstorm and all). I love the view from home but, once upon a time, this old hermit actually went somewhere else.

From January to May, 2006, I studied abroad at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences campus of St. Petersburg State University in St. Petersburg, Russia. Prior to this, my only international travel experience had been to Canada, which was always by car and didn’t require a passport at the time. My semester abroad saw me board my first ever international flight…alone. It was a big, scary endeavor for me, and I’ve shared a few photos from that trip already.

One thing I wasn’t expecting from that trip was spring break. Since the university shut down for a week in March, program participants were encouraged to use the free time to travel elsewhere (especially since we already had our passports and vaccines and all that). A few of my friends…
