When I told people I was heading to Mexico City for ten days, they wondered if I knew something they didn’t. “You’re going where?”What’s there?” “Why would you need more than just a couple of days?” Someone even told my friend, “You’re brave.”

I get it. Ciudad de Mexico (Mexico City) is not often a go-to destination for travelers. It’s a jumping-off point for other parts of the country or Latin America, but for me, this city of 22 million has always tempted me.

My interest was piqued in junior high school when we studied Mexico and its history. I was lucky to have a teacher who was passionate about the country.

When I was older, my best friend was a flight attendant and returned from her Mexico City layovers with wonderful stories about the colorful markets she visited and the delicious food she ate.

I knew I’d see it myself one day, but I didn’t realize it would take me so long.

As we approached the Mexico City Airport, it was a beautiful sunny day without too much of the city’s trademark smog. It was still hazy, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Ciudad de Mexico was spread out below us, for as far as the eye could see.
