When the Sun Beam Entered the Cave, It Was Pure Magic
It is still hard to believe that it was real
In 2018, my partner Chris and I spent a few nights in San Cristobal de las Casas in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico. We were on our way to Oaxaca to participate in the celebrations of Dia de las Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a multi-day national celebration where people pay respects to family members who have already departed.
But first, we had heard great things about this mountain city and wanted to check it out. Plus, it broke up what would have been a very long bus trip coming from Flores, Guatemala.
We met Jackie at an artist hangout that we stumbled upon one day while exploring the city. We bonded instantly over our shared love of art, and since both she and Chris were tattoo artists, they found common ground immediately. It wasn’t until the end of our stay that they realized that they shared the same birthday.
While hanging out with her one afternoon, she mentioned that she had heard there were pretty cool caves nearby. Her host had suggested that she visit the Mamut caves as they were the quietest and had the fewest visitors.
