The West Side of Koh Phangan — Picture by myself

I find myself on an island in Thailand I did not have any intentions to get back to at all. Koh Phangan is known for its full-moon party rave scene, and that was exactly the reason why I was here 10 years ago — and exactly why I didn’t want to return.

I have memories of drunk and high backpackers passed out on the streets, endless plastic cups and buckets floating around in the sea, and girls peeing on the beach because toilets were too far to reach. The music was extremely loud and everyone seemed totally out of control. It was wild and rowdy.

So when I left I could cross another bucket list item off but had no desire whatsoever to return here ever again. Especially since I stopped partying and drinking completely since a few years.

Yet here I am. Magically attracted to the call of this island.

How did I end up here

As a long-term traveler, I intend to avoid touristy places like this completely. When I left my resident country Mexico to escape the heat this summer, there were two places I for sure wasn’t going to go to: Koh Phangan and Bali.
