Trayvon was murdered four years ago on this day. It felt like just the other day I was lamenting over what would’ve been his 21st birthday. That’s because there’s only 21 days between the two.

The proximity of both his life and death are harrowing.

Sometimes I wake up and I’m just like, “Damn.”

My spirit was heavy this morning. Zimmerman is still a free man.

I remember coming across the picture of Trayvon at space camp around this time last year. I’d never seen that image. This year, it was a picture of Trayvon standing with a snowboard in hand. The media’s ability to construct narratives and perceptions is dangerously powerful.

The “loud music” case.

Jordan Davis.

The “hoodie and skittles” case.

Trayvon.

Why don’t we call the cases by their proper names — those of the killers?

Michael Dunn. George Zimmerman. Darren Wilson. Theodore Wafer. Joseph Weekley. Dante Servin. Johannes Mehserle. Michael Slager. Peter Liang.

Why don’t we call their deaths by what they really are — murders?
