In honor of World Spay and Neuter Day, Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger and Freeholder Dan Christy announced that the Gloucester County Animal Shelter would waive adoption fees at the shelter on Feb. 28.

Adoption fees include spaying or neutering at the new clinic, among other veterinary services.

World Spay and Neuter Day, according to the Humane Society of the United States, is the last Tuesday of Feb. and provides an opportunity for shelter and rescue organizations to highlight their spay and neuter programs, and win more community support in the form of donors, volunteers and clients.

“Adoption from the Gloucester County Animal Shelter is typically much less expensive than adopting from a private source, but you cannot beat free and on February 28 the adoptions at our shelter will cost nothing,” said Damminger.

“We can think of no better way of celebrating World Spay Day than by doing as much as we can to find animals good homes. We hope that by waiving the fees on Feb. 28 we can increase our adoption rates and get more animals into loving homes,” Christy said.

Applications must be pre-approved by Feb. 24 in order to be eligible to receive a free cat or dog on Feb. 28.

The regular fee for dogs is $125 and $95 for cats. There is a discounted $35 fee for senior citizens and military veterans. The fees for dogs include spay and neuter, Antigen Heartworm test, nasal Bordetella, worming, all age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, collar, leash and an identification tag from Gloucester County Animal Shelter. For cats the fee includes spay and neuter, Feline Leukemia/AIDS combination test, all age appropriate vaccinations, worming, microchip, disposable cat carrier and an identification tag and collar from Gloucester County Animal Shelter.

If the animal is not spayed or neutered at the time of adoption, an appointment will be made for surgery and the animal will be delivered to the clinic and the new owner can pick up their pet after surgery has been completed.
