In many countries around the world, International Women’s Day is an official holiday spent honoring women with flowers and gifts. In other areas, the day sparks advocacy and activism, historical recognition and more. In Gloucester County, women reflect on strength, celebrate their rights, and embrace unity.

The day began in the early 1900s, when oppression and inequality motivated women to become vocal and active in advocating for their rights. According to the International Women’s Day website (www.internationalwomensday.com), in 1905, 15,000 women demanded shorter hours, better pay and voting rights in a march through New York City. Since then, the day has grown into a platform for empowerment and the celebration of women’s power and might.

This year’s theme is “Be Bold for Change,” calling women all over the globe to take “groundbreaking action that truly drives the greatest change for women” on March 8. Women across Gloucester County believed the theme represents having a voice, using that voice and celebrating that voice.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing stories, experiences and advice from women throughout Gloucester County who make their voices heard for change. Hear more empowered voices from women in Gloucester County here.
