As the novel coronavirus swept through our lives for the better part of 2020, so far, governments, states, and local communities have struggled to keep up with it. Case numbers have been climbing, economies slowed to a crawl, the medical community is often uncertain as to the best way to deal with the pandemic, and conflicting information is released day after day. The truth is that the novel coronavirus is a new challenge to all of humanity amidst unprecedented globalism. So far, we can’t see it, we can’t contain it, and crucially, we are still unable to accurately model it.
It is in such times that we, at Gnosis, hope that prediction markets can help us by providing some signal out of the noise around us. Gnosis is proud to fund and support the public non-profit initiative Corona Information Markets, a decentralized prediction markets platform, with the aim of uncovering key information about the novel coronavirus. We have provided $50K in subsidy to create 50 information markets covering different aspects of the pandemic.
Prediction markets or information markets are, in essence, a vehicle for aggregating information about the expected outcome of a future event or milestone. Unlike traditional polling, data is collected by incentivizing true information and disincentivizing false information. Prediction markets aggregate various information sources, incentivize sharing expert knowledge, and create data layers for probabilities — giving each future outcome a quantified probability of occurring.
Still today, no clear answers exist for questions like, “When will the peak in the number of cases happen?” or “Are you immune if you have already contracted and recovered from COVID-19?” Drawing on the insights of experts is helpful in providing some guidance and enabling us to make more informed decisions for the sake of our families and our communities. We are hoping that the Corona Information Markets platform will allow for the uncovering of truth regarding vital questions and enable rapid spread of useful information, making it accessible to everyone.
