The Burner Wallet and Gnosis Safe are Teaming Up

We’re improving the crypto wallet onboarding experience with a seamless integration with the Burner Wallet so users can transfer funds to a Gnosis Safe wallet with the click of a button.

We know crypto has an onboarding problem.

Interacting with the decentralized web is not very accessible for the vast majority of users, which creates a huge barrier to the push towards universal adoption. Although the Gnosis Safe is built for secure interaction, the onboarding experience can be challenging for new users.

However, we don’t believe users should have to choose between security and accessibility.

Enter the Burner Wallet.

The Burner Wallet is one of the most user friendly wallets that allows for quick and easy transactions on the go. It’s based on the xDAI blockchain which is a hard spoon of Ethereum. It has a 5-second block time and all gas fees are paid in DAI. The wallet lives entirely in your browser, so no 3rd party app is required. When you’re done using your wallet, it can be ‘burned’ at the click of a button.

Setting up the Burner Wallet is as simple as typing in a domain name (xdai.io) and transferring funds from wherever you keep you DAI/ETH. There’s also no need to download anything — everything works in-browser. So in less than 10 seconds you can have a functional Burner Wallet.

An Interesting Proposition

Earlier this year, Austin Griffith (a.k.a the mind behind the Burner Wallet) reached out to us with an interest in improving the Gnosis Safe’s onboarding experience.

He offered to build a simple interface within the Burner Wallet for seamless deployment and interaction with the Gnosis Safe. To learn more about the Gnosis Safe at a glance, check out our blog post Why the Gnosis Safe is Different.

What does this mean for Burner Wallet users?

The Burner Wallet provides a great onboarding experience for users, but is not an ideal solution for the permanent storage of funds. This is why we want to integrate the Gnosis Safe as an offboarding solution for Burner Wallet users. While the integration’s details are still being worked out, in summary, once a user accumulates enough xDAI in their Burner Wallet, they will be able to create a new Gnosis Safe with the click of a button. Since the Gnosis Safe enables users to pay Ethereum network fees with DAI, this means that Burner Wallet users won’t have to purchase any ETH to cover the small fee associated with deploying a new Gnosis Safe Wallet.

We believe that combining the security and extended functionality of the Gnosis Safe with the accessibility of the Burner Wallet will be an awesome experience for users and a milestone in Ethereum wallet infrastructure.

Why is this a GECO (Gnosis Ecosystem) funded project?

Due to the immediate relevance of Austin’s proposal to build an integration for the Gnosis Safe and the success of the Burner Wallet, we decided to support the project outside of the usual GECO funding rounds. This decision will not affect the number of teams we will support going forward.

Stay tuned for an update on our work in the coming weeks!

Gnosis will continue looking for partnerships, and encourages both new and established projects to reach out — as we aim to give a diverse array of teams ample opportunity to be a part of our ecosystem.

Many thanks to Eric Gorski, Kei Kreutler, Stefan George, Tobi Schubotz, and Mareen Glaeske.
