How prediction market tools like conditional tokens can change gaming

In 2019, we released the first version of the conditional token framework, which allows you to create tokens that represent the outcome of correlated events. While we see conditional tokens as fundamentally enabling efficient prediction markets, we imagine many other cases for their use.

In this post, we’ll focus on how conditional tokens can be used in play: from a maze game to a collective Futarchy AI player in games like Tic Tac Toe, Chess, and Go.

Garden of Forking Paths: A game built on conditional tokens

Many of us are familiar with the Choose Your Own Adventure series, or the recent Netflix series Bandersnatch, which allowed viewers to make key decisions in the TV show’s outcome. Their underlying mechanism is simple, yet compelling: the audience becomes participatory players in a narrative, adding a game-like component to traditionally consumptive media.

Conditional tokens, which essentially allow users to “invest” in differing outcomes, could be one tool to make narrative games more compelling, and immediately create interoperable, secondary markets on an event’s outcome.

“Whosoever would undertake some atrocious enterprise should act as if it were already accomplished, should impose upon himself a future as irrevocable as the past.“¹

Let’s start with an example maze game, which we’ll call here Forking Gardens, inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’s short story “The Garden of Forking Paths.” Envision taking part in a story that involves foreseeing an outcome, in which you know you must achieve certain objectives before reaching its end state. You begin from a single starting point, and the game offers different paths. Those paths could lead to a dead end, guide you to a mysterious opponent, or return you to their beginning. Only one route will allow you to reach the story’s full progression, its endpoint, and guide you to its next realm.

In this game built on the conditional token framework, the players would all share an initial starting point, and they must commit to one route they’ll take throughout a maze, with only partial knowledge on its form. Under the hood of this game, technically it would mean that players take a position and invest in the conditional token that represents their chosen route. Then, the adventure starts, and players navigate the maze according to their chosen paths. By the end of the journey, only one of the possible routes will lead players to its endpoint in time. If players reached this moment in time successfully, the path—represented by a conditional token—they’ve invested in will now act as the access right to progress onto the next level: another maze and another journey in time.

One could imagine different iterations on this game wherein players must research and investigate a level’s narrative, to gain expert information beforehand on the path they will choose. Perhaps players could invest in multiple outcomes or “endpoints,” and diversify their narrative commitments.

Given the market mechanism and open framework underlying the game, it would be quite easy to then imagine secondary or interoperable e-gaming markets, wherein spectators invest in their favorite player or specified paths through the maze, opening participation to an even greater general audience.

A Collective Player: How futarchy can act as a crowd-sourced “AI” in popular games

Futarchy is a major use case for the conditional tokens open framework. The nature of conditional tokens enable combinatorial outcomes which are essential for futarchy. You might be asking, however, what’s futarchy, and what does it have to do with games in this post? Futarchy is a form of governance that uses prediction markets for decision-making. For example, you could create a prediction market on which political candidate, if elected, is most likely to support passing a universal healthcare bill by 2022. In this form of government, the market would decide who is elected, but profit would be determined based on whether a universal healthcare bill is passed by 2022. Doesn’t sound like a fun game to you yet? Imagine playing a popular game like Tic Tac Toe online. Yet, rather than playing as a single player, you play as a distributed team all contributing beliefs on the best next move, surfaced as market positions, to a Futarchy AI, which then performs an action in the game on your collective behalf. This crowd-sourced Futarchy AI would decide on which moves are the best ones to beat the opponent.

Let’s walk through it together.

For each move, the Futarchy AI opens a market on which action to take next in the game. The main metric for evaluating the next move could be your ultimate performance in the game:

Will you win against your opponent in this game of Tic Tac Toe, if a given action is taken?

  2. No

In Tic Tac Toe, a player has 9 different options for the first move. So, the vote for the first move would be stated as follows:

What should be the first move to claim a square (X)?

Everyone participating in the futarchy market would now decide the best move to win the overall game, by buying the correspondent outcome token in the market. Let’s imagine the crowd decided to go for B2, i.e. the most highly valued outcome token was B2 at the specified market end time. The opponent player then chooses to claim square A3.

Once again, the Futarchy AI opens a market to decide on the next move.

This will process continue until there is one winner or until there are no longer any possible moves.

The overall question of the futarchy market would be whether the Tic Tac Toe game will be won by the Futarchy AI. This market will be conditionally dependent on different markets deciding on the next move of the futarchy player. Lastly, the starting question on whether the game was won or not will be evaluated and resolved. Participants who purchased the correct tokens leading to the victory of the game will incur a profit on top of winning the match of Tic Tac Toe.

This game of a crowd-sourced Futarchy AI playing Tic Tac Toe is, of course, a very simple example. The Futarchy AI markets could be more dependent on strategy for advanced players. For example, one market series could ask: if the Futarchy AI moves to square B2, will the opponent move to C3? These market series would then encode and surface foresight in complex patterns of play. Such a market series could be more elaborate in Go, chess or other games, which have a greater combinatorial set of outcomes.

So why should we make such a simple game a bit more cumbersome? Putting futarchy to the test in gamified environments may be one way of rapid-prototyping how well futarchy works for gathering diverse opinions in limited timeframes, before moving on to more complex or high stake challenges. Just imagine, one day our little Futarchy AI may be facing the then-old AlphaGo.
