This year the Ethereum community went from #hodl to #buidl, with an unwavering commitment to developing decentralized applications. With this in mind, we are happy to unveil the Gnosis Ecosystem Fund (GECO). In March we launched a prediction market challenge (Gnosis X) with a similar intent, to encourage developers to contribute to and build on prediction market applications. After some months of contemplation and feedback from participants, we decided to expand the scope of our project. And so became the Gnosis Ecosystem Fund!

GECO is more than just a fund, not only are we encouraging third-party development on Gnosis platforms, we’re providing mentorship, community, and outreach support. GECO participants will have access to our developers, product managers, communications experts, and our beautiful blockchain co-working space in Berlin.

Many of you might be wondering, what sets the Gnosis Ecosystem Fund apart from other grant programs?

We created GECO with a mission; to encourage, to educate, and to involve.

We want to encourage the community to build modules and integrations for our diverse products, enhance the overall user experience, and develop market mechanisms and governance tools. In doing so, we believe the Gnosis Ecosystem Fund will strengthen the Ethereum ecosystem by addressing areas that have posed a challenge for blockchain developers in the past.

GECO also aims to educate the community. Maybe you love to code but haven’t found an opportunity to engage with the blockchain space? Or maybe you’re a seasoned Solidity developer and are interested in more structured opportunities to hone your skills? Regardless of your background, GECO is the best opportunity for newbies or decentralized technology enthusiasts to #buidl. As our ecosystem continues to develop, we hope to foster a supportive community where past projects are willing to support and mentor new projects.

Finally, GECO seeks to involve the community in governing the fund. To this end of wider participation, the application process itself has a roadmap, beginning with a transparent application process on Github. We are looking into different governance mechanisms — from prediction markets to DAOs — to enable the community to take part in decision-making for the second wave of grants in June 2019.

How can you get involved?

For the remainder of 2018, grant proposals can be submitted at any time and will be evaluated by the Gnosis team. In 2019, we will introduce set application deadlines, advisors, and a governance mechanism to include the community in the grant approval process.

Your proposal should include a short description of the following:

  • The overall goal of your project
  • What you want to build
  • Why you want to build it
  • A detailed technical description
  • A schedule including milestones and overall timeframes
  • An estimate of required funding
  • Your programming portfolio
  • Brief description of your team
  • Why you think you should receive funding
  • Where you’ve applied for other sources of funding if applicable

Check out our template here!

Roadmap

  • 31.03.2019 — First submission deadline up to $125,000 in grants
  • 30.06.2019 — Second submission deadline up to $125,000 in grants and include the community in the granting procedure
  • 31.09.2019 — Third submission deadline up to $125,000 in grants
  • 31.12.2019 — Fourth submission deadline up to $125,000 in grants
  • Over the year up to $60,000 in bounties

Bounties, Bounties, and More Bounties

Not interested in building an entire application? Don’t despair! Gnosis also partnered with GitCoin to bring you bounties to build on the Safe, Dutch X, and Prediction Market protocols or contribute to our educational materials. Successful participants will be rewarded in GNO! Interested in learning more? Visit our GitCoin profile for information!

To reach our goal of a decentralized future, it is imperative that we support developers who want to build on decentralized platforms like Gnosis. GECO will therefore support the growth of projects that contribute to the redistributed future we’re imagining.

Interested in meeting our team? We’ll be onboarding blockchain developers at hackathons around the globe and hosting events at Full Node in the coming months. Follow us on Twitter to find out where we’ll be.

Many thanks to Lauren, Kei, Lea, Eric and Nadja.
