THE DIAN FOSSEY GORILLA FUND JOINS GOCHAIN NETWORK AS A SIGNING NODE
The Fossey Fund is now operating a node of the GoChain public blockchain network
RENO, NV | ATLANTA, GA — FEB 15, 2022 — The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, founded by pioneering primatologist and scientist Dr. Dian Fossey, and the GoChain Foundation, the developer of the highly scalable and green GoChain blockchain protocol, today announced the signing of a Node Operating Agreement whereas the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is now operating a signing node in support of the GoChain blockchain network.
As a signing node, the Fossey Fund will participate as one of a maximum of 50 highly reputable enterprises and organizations to run specialized servers that facilitate the GoChain Foundation’s network’s Proof of Reputation (PoR) consensus algorithm and to validate the blocks of transactions produced on the GoChain blockchain network. The Fossey Fund joins other world-class, high impact organizations and universities including Penn State University, Conservation International, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Dish, and the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) to support GoChain’s Proof of Reputation network.
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (originally the Digit Fund) is dedicated to the conservation, protection and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. The Digit Fund was originally founded by Dr. Fossey, who was a leading primatologist, author of Gorillas in the Mist, and a member of the “Trimates”, three world-renowned female scientists recruited by paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey to study great apes in their natural environments — the other two are Jane Goodall, who studies chimpanzees, and Biruté Galdikas, who studies orangutans.
Dr. Fossey spent nearly 20 years in Rwanda, where she studied gorillas, supported conservation efforts and fought against poaching and other human activity in wildlife habitats; her work helped people to understand the sapience of gorillas. She established the Karisoke Research Center in 1967 in Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains to protect and study the endangered mountain gorillas. In 1978, Dr. Fossey established the Digit Fund (named in memory of Fossey’s favorite gorilla “Digit”, who was ruthlessly killed by poachers) for the purpose of financing patrols and preventing the poaching of mountain gorillas.
Sadly in 1985, the world mourned as Dr. Fossey was found murdered in her cabin in Rwanda. Although her life was tragically cut short, the Digit Fund, renamed the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in 1992, has since become a leading gorilla and forest habitat conservation organization in Africa. More than five decades after she moved to Rwanda, Dr. Fossey’s passionate, unrelenting work led to the creation of the Fossey Fund’s first permanent home: the Ellen DeGeneres Campus, which opened in early 2022. The campus is a state-of-the-art research and learning facility aimed at educating the next generation of conservationists in Africa and beyond.
GoChain is proud to partner with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to support and help further advance the organization’s vision, important work and mission. As part of the new node partnership, GoChain will work with the Fossey Fund to identify opportunities to leverage advanced technologies to include blockchain technology to support conservation and protection efforts of mountain gorillas in Africa and beyond. The Fossey Fund will participate in the governance of the GoChain blockchain network and help to further grow the GoChain community and ecosystem.
“We look forward to working with GoChain as a node validator and exploring how new technologies such as blockchain can enhance our gorilla and forest ecosystem conservation work.” — Tara Stoinski, President and CEO/Chief Scientific Officer of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund
“We are honored to count the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund as a new partner. Dr. Fossey’s incredible legacy lives on in the Fossey Fund and we look forward to working closely with Tara and her team to leverage blockchain technology for the conservation and protection of gorillas and their habitats.” — Henry Ines, GoChain Foundation Steering Committee Member & CEO
