The Big Data Era Meets Small Businesses

By Shivam Gupta

We live in the information age where every corporate move is driven by the information at hand. Be it giant corporations or small businesses, it is almost impossible to take the “information” part out of their decision-making process. Since information has become such a crucial piece in today’s society, retrieving and analyzing it in a sophisticated way is becoming the demand of the era.

Computer scientists do the best job at retrieving the information; however, there’s no better person to analyze the retrieved information than an economist. Realizing the power of both these professions, I decided to double major in Computer Science and Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and I am set to graduate this December.

I got to know about GoDaddy’s internship program when I attended a tech talk by one of the software engineers of the company. It was then that I realized the value GoDaddy can bring to small businesses, which is essentially the economic backbone of any country. After analyzing all the internship offers I had, I discovered how GoDaddy’s mission aligned with my own. Now, I’m an intern in the Data Science team at the company, which provides me the opportunity to analyze all sorts of data and see how the company can bring more value to small businesses. Down the lane, I would like to empower more professions with the power of big data.

At GoDaddy’s TechFest, I plan on building a service that empowers small businesses by giving them a deeper insight into their own business and their competition.
