This verse is part of the famous story of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came to save the world from sin and death.
The angel announced this message to a group of shepherds who were watching their flocks at night near Bethlehem.
They were terrified by the sudden appearance of the heavenly messenger, but the angel reassured them that he had come to bring them good news of great joy.
The most wonderful time of the year
We are entering the time which is called ‘The most wonderful time of the year!’ This is the season of Advent, which means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’.
It is the time when we prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the first coming of Jesus into the world as a baby, and also to anticipate his second coming as the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is a time of hope, peace, love, and joy.
God’s gift to humanity
It is wonderful because we remember God’s gift to humanity. The Bible tells us that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
God gave us the greatest gift of all, his own Son, who left his glory in heaven and became a human being, born of a virgin, in a humble stable.
He lived a perfect life, taught us the truth, healed the sick, raised the dead, and died on the cross for our sins.
He rose again on the third day, and ascended to heaven, where he intercedes for us and prepares a place for us.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead, and to establish his everlasting kingdom.
The best news that the world could ever have heard
The coming of Jesus was the best news that the world could ever have heard. It was the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior, a Messiah, a Redeemer, who would rescue his people from their enemies, from their sins, and from death itself.
It was the announcement of God’s grace, mercy, and love for a fallen and broken world. It was the declaration of God’s plan to restore his creation, to reconcile his children, and to reign in righteousness and justice.
It was the revelation of God’s glory, power, and wisdom, displayed in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
He wants to come into your world and fill you with hope and joy
Today, he wants to come into your world and fill you with hope and joy.
He is not a distant or indifferent God, but a personal and intimate God, who knows you, loves you, and cares for you.
He invites you to receive his gift of salvation, to trust in his grace, and to follow his will. He promises to be with you always, to guide you, to strengthen you, and to comfort you.
He offers you his peace, his joy, and his love, which surpasses all understanding. He calls you to be his child, his friend, and his disciple.
Will you accept his invitation? Will you welcome him into your life? Will you share his good news with others?
This is the reason why we celebrate Christmas. This is the good news of great joy. This is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
