A successful GoFundMe can change the life not only of the person receiving the help, but also the person who started it.

We’ve seen this before, and there’s no better current example than Greta Van Susteren, now a two-time GoFundMe campaign organizer.

Last year, while traveling with Samaritan’s Purse in West Africa, Greta met a boy in Liberia with a tragic story and a terrifying medical condition: orphaned after his father died from Ebola, Sampson had numerous facial tumors causing deformity, blindness in his left eye and near blindness in his right eye.

Greta decided to help Sampson. Her GoFundMe ended up raising over $150,000 from more than 4,000 donors worldwide who were moved by this boy’s medical crisis. And thanks to this wellspring of generosity and help from Samaritan’s Purse, doctors in the US were able to perform life-saving surgery — and even helped Sampson regain his sight.

It would have been easy to stop there. But now Greta has a more ambitious goal: to provide Sampson’s home country of Liberia with a CT scanner to save even more lives.

Surprising as it may be, the entire country of Liberia is without this crucial piece of medical equipment. Because of limitations like this, cases such as Sampson’s progress far beyond what they should because proper medical intervention can’t be made.

Greta wants to change this. And with her new GoFundMe, already $88,000 has been raised out of an formidable goal of $275,000. But there’s still a way to go to ensure the success of this critical project.

A donation to this campaign isn’t just a generous gift — it’s also a vital investment in the health and livelihood of thousands of people who, through the random circumstances of their birth, don’t have access to a technology many of us take for granted.

The campaign to save Sampson’s life showed the power of a group of people to make a real difference. It’s time to do it again — and have a lasting impact on an entire country.
