In today’s world, having a connection with your phone has become a habit. You wake up every morning, what’s the first thing on your mind? To check your phone, trying to see who has contacted you or what’s happening in the world, a lot of us have become conditioned to this routine.

Last week I tracked my media consumption through Apple’s feature called Screen Time. It tracked information ranging from how much time I spent on specific apps, what days and time I was on my phone the most and the total of pickups for each app. The connection that I have with my phone is very eye-opening. My media diet reflects that I’m constantly on the lookout about what others are doing. The majority of my screen time is spent on social media platforms. One can conclude that I am interested in what the world, friends, and celebrities are doing daily. Most of the pickups of my phone occur on Tuesdays, which happens to be my longest day. My day begins at 6 am and doesn’t end until 10 pm. Being in class enables me to pick up my phone more often due to boredom. Most of my time is spent on apps that allow me to communicate with others or gain social information on my cellular device.

In a week, I spent 29 hours and 2 minutes on social networking apps, 2 hours and 27 minutes on entertainment, and 2 hours on productivity apps. With a total of 45 hours and 2 minutes of screen time, with an average of 6 hours and 26 minutes per day. The total amount of pickups for the week was 1624. My average pickups were unbelievable, with a total of 232, then Tuesday reached a peak of 331 pickups. The top four apps with most pickups are Messages had 431, Snapchat with 369, Instagram had 90, and Safari with 65.

Monitoring this feature has made me more enlightened about my phone habits. It made me wonder, what could I have been doing within that time instead of being on my phone? 29 hours on social media could’ve been for studying, hanging out with friends, or just sleeping! Which we all love to do. Collecting this data will make one more aware of the time spent on their phone and question themselves the next time they pick it up.
