The internet has brought a fundamental change to our lives, revolutionizing the way we work, socialize, and entertain ourselves. Humanity is increasingly spending more time online, a trend that was only exhibited by the pandemic as people were forced to spend more time at home.

With the fourth industrial revolution, it is said that the lines between the physical and the digital will become blurred. We will be interacting and populating virtual environments known as Metaverses.

In this article, we will be looking at what Metaverses are, why they are hailed as the future of the internet, and how our team aims to replicate the experience of a metaverse inside Gold Fever.

What are metaverses?

Metaverses will combine work, entertainment, eCommerce, and social media features within a single virtual environment.

Imagine placing a pair of virtual reality goggles and immersing yourself in a gigantic virtual city, where you can meet with your friends, go to concerts, shop for clothes, or join your colleagues in a shared office workspace.

Immersive virtual cities will be filled with attractions and divided into specific regions with different themes to it. You’ll have your own avatar, which can be a 3D renderization of your own body.

You’ll be able to try out 3D versions of real clothes, see how they would look on you, and order them directly to your home. Alternatively, you can also customize your avatar by purchasing pieces of digital clothing, also known as “skins” in the gaming industry.

Gaming and NFTs

Although metaverses go beyond gaming, the most successful and popular metaverses are games like Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, or even Second Life to some extend. These early iterations of metaverses are becoming extremely popular. There are now gigantic user-generated libraries on Minecraft and a virtual concert of Travis Scott, attended by over 27 million people, took place on Fortnite.

Metaverses will also be the home for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as every “skin” or object acquired can be its own unique NFT. Interoperability between NFTs from different games will also be possible in the metaverse, allowing users to hang out with their friends using a rare NFT armor that took you 40h of gameplay to achieve.

Closing thoughts

Facebook has recently announced a $50 million investment into metaverse building and has spent an even larger amount of capital in virtual reality (VR) development.

However, the full expression metaverses are still potentially 15 to 20 years away. That is evident by the currently available decentralized metaverses, like Dencentraland and The Sandbox, which show a lot of promise but still lack development.

Gold Fever will also be adding metaverse features, including incorporating mini-games inside of the main game. These features will take a while to be implemented, as they are scheduled for Q3 of 2022.
