The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is the data protection authority responsible for ensuring that European institutions comply with European Data Protection Law.

Their role includes:

  • provide advice to EU institutions and bodies on all matters relating data protection law
  • intervene before the Court of Justice of the EU to provide expert advice on interpreting data protection law;
  • cooperate with national supervisory authorities (a.k.a. “Supervisory Authorities”) and other supervisory bodies to improve consistency in protecting personal information.

Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 lays down the EU data protection rules for EU institutions and the duties and powers of the Supervisor (Chapter VI) as well as the institutional independence of the EDPS.
