What is the “ European Data Protection Supervisor” (EDPS)?
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is the data protection authority responsible for ensuring that European institutions comply with European Data Protection Law.
Their role includes:
- provide advice to EU institutions and bodies on all matters relating data protection law
- intervene before the Court of Justice of the EU to provide expert advice on interpreting data protection law;
- cooperate with national supervisory authorities (a.k.a. “Supervisory Authorities”) and other supervisory bodies to improve consistency in protecting personal information.
Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 lays down the EU data protection rules for EU institutions and the duties and powers of the Supervisor (Chapter VI) as well as the institutional independence of the EDPS.
