On October 28th, the Fate of the Damned Update to Sea of Thieves released, bringing with it a unique schedule of voyages and challenges related to the sinister Shadows of Fate Skeletons. This is the first of three voyages now available from November 18th through December 9th, and this Guide will walk you through how to complete this first voyage: The Fate of the Wild Shores!

The Event also contains Event Challenges to unlock, and these Voyages can help with that progress — for a rundown of these challenges and their rewards, check out our Fate of the Damned Challenges Guide!

Overview

Larinna’s Fate of the Damned voyages are fairly straightforward and tell a simple story. Along the way, you will be able to pick up two Flames of Fate to color your lanterns, and use them to defend against Shadows of Fate skeletons. At the end of the voyage, you’ll receive a Ritual Skull.

With two Flames of Fate and a Ritual Skull, this voyage acts as a good starting point to then tackle the Fort of the Damned!

Background

In order to get through this voyage, you’ll need to know a thing or two about Shadows of Fate Skeletons and Flames of Fate. If you’re new, or just need a refresher, here’s the lowdown:

Shadows of Fate Skeletons

Shadows of Fate Skeletons behave similar to Shadow Skeletons, which means they are invulnerable to attack unless they are flashed with light by holding up your Lantern. But Shadows of Fate are special- they are color coded and can only be made vulnerable with a colored lantern that matches their hue. How are you going to change the color on your pirate’s lantern??

Flames of Fate

On Larinna’s Voyage, you’ll discover skeleton remains that are holding lanterns with colored flames. If you hold up your lantern, you can take the flame from the other lantern and change your own’s color!

Every time you die however, your lantern will reset. Try changing one of your Ship’s Lanterns to your new colored flame so you can “save” that color on your ship.

If you lose the flame color, you can always get it the old fashioned way — dying and taking a flame from the Well of Fates on the Ferry of the Damned. Death by Shark Bite leads to a Blue lantern, Poison leads to Purple, Lightning is White, Fire is Red, death by Skeleton is Green, and killed by another crew’s player is Pink.

Beginning the Voyage

Speak to Larinna (standing right outside any outpost’s tavern), and her dialogue will give a little background on what’s going on in the Sea of Thieves- Shadows of Fate skeletons are popping up, and she’s sent some Bilge Rat crews to investigate, but none have returned…

Go to her Black Market to nab a voyage titled The Search for Wild Plentiful Shadows of Fate, then vote with your crew to begin the voyage on your ship.

Larinna’s Note

Fellow Bilge Rats:

You’ve heard the rumors — Shadows of Fate running wild. I suggest asking Duke, assuming he’s still at the Lagoon of Whispers (and sober).

-Larinna

When you begin the voyage, you’ll receive a note from Larinna telling you to head to Lagoon of Whispers and speak to Duke.

Thirsty Duke

Duke will tell ask you to dig up his chest of Grogs and bring it to him. Luckily, it’s not buried very far- look for a shovel sticking out of the sand near the water’s edge, close to Duke. Dig here to get the chest, then hand it to the old drunk. You’ll receive the map to the next island- where Larinna’s Bilge Rat crew was last headed…

First Island

The map you receive will inform you of the island you need to sail to, but that island will not have any X’s to mark the spot. This is not a bug! Search the island for a skeleton corpse holding a colored Lantern of Fate (Green). Use this flame to change your own lantern’s color, then you can read the Bilge Rat journal laying next to the corpse (just for fun) and pick up the parchment in their hand or near by (required to progress).

This will cause a crew of Shadows of Fate Skeletons to spawn and attack you, matching the color of the lantern you just discovered. Flash them with that color to make them vulnerable, then strike them down.

One of them will drop a Skull of the Damned to sell to the Order of Souls

Second Island

Like the first island, the map now in your inventory outlines an island without any X’s on it. This will usually be a Skeleton Fort. Head there, and once again locate a skeleton corpse holding a lantern, and repeat all the steps from the previous island. You will get the Purple Flame of Fate and fight Purple Shadows of Fate, and receive another parchment and Skull of the Damned.

Final Island

This last map WILL have an X-marks the Spot on it- however, there’s nothing at that spot to dig up. Instead, finding that spot will lead you to two skeletons performing a ritual that will summon a weakened Ghost of Captain Graymarrow, who will attack you. This Graymarrow isn’t as difficult as he can be in other settings- this is just a warm up fight for players that will then tackle the Fort of the Damned, and his health is lower and attacks aren’t as devastating.

Occasionally, Graymarrow might summon a wave of Shadows of Fate skeletons, a mix of Purple and Green, so make sure you’ve saved those Flames of Fate on your ship’s lanterns. If you’re playing solo and struggling, lure him to an ammo crate and just spam him with Blunderbuss shots until he finally goes down- he’ll drop a Ritual Skull for all your troubles.

REWARD:

Completing ANY of Larinna’s weekly voyages will earn you the Face of Fear face paint. Each voyage also leads to Skulls of the Damned, and 1 Ritual Skull, as well as the 2 Flames of Fate lantern colors.

And that’s all there is to it for the 1st Fate of the Damned voyage! These nice and simple voyages are a convenient way to tackle the Fate of the Damned Event Challenges, or get a head start to tackle the Fort of the Damned.
