A Mystery unfolds on the Seas
Beginning with March 2021’s update, eagle eyed pirates will quickly discover a mysterious new journal laying about the Tavern, and new Bilge Rat commendations to earn in the Legends of the Sea tab. Somebody has hidden Journals all around the seas that are linked to a great mystery, but we’re here to help discover those journals so you can unravel their secrets…
What is this all about?
- “Glitterbeard” the Pirate has left 22 journals throughout the seas
- There are Bilge Rat Commendations (go to Pirate Log>Reputation>Bilge Rats>Legends of the Sea) for finding them and cosmetic rewards for doing so
- Most importantly, the journals will clue you in to discovering a hidden surprise, and solving this puzzle is required to locate the final journal/unlock the rewards
This Guide provides the location of each of Glitterbeard’s Journals, but DOES NOT SPOIL the solution to the final puzzle!
Why are we keeping this puzzle a secret?
The Legend of Glitterbeard quest is a tribute to a staff member of Rare, James White, who tragically passed away early last year. The puzzle solution hidden within these journals is meant to honor his memory, and this tribute is very important to the hard working team at Rare.
At their request, we will not be revealing the solution to this mystery to our readers, and ask that you discover it organically through reading the journals and collaborating with other crews you meet upon the seas.
We strive to provide thorough guide content to our readers and understand this generates the bulk of our viewership, however for this particular adventure, the magic is uniquely about players coming together to share in the sense of wonder and discovery. We hope you respect our decision to withhold this secret.

- Glitterbeard Cannon Flare- unlocked by completing “A Glittering Chronicle” (read all 22 Glitterbeard Journals)
Journal Locations
Below we’ve described the location of each of Glitterbeard’s Journals, except for the The Legend of Glitterbeard. To locate this final journal, you’ll need to piece together clues from within the journals and maybe even seek guidance from other crews you meet on the seas.
TIP: If you’re on the hunt for Glitterbeard’s journals, consider equipping the Glitterbeard Sails (see Rewards above)- this shows other crews you are doing this quest, and may encourage them to help you!
If you wish to find Glitterbeard’s Journals on your own, Stop Reading Now! Within the Legends of the Sea tab of the Bilge Rats Reputation Menu, you’ll find a small clue to the location of each journal. This should be enough to locate them on your own, but if you’re struggling, come back here for the solutions.
In Good Company
Sanctuary Outpost- near an overturned rowboat on the south side of the island
My First Gold
Booty Isle- on a barrel in the middle of this small island
Actions and Words
Smuggler’s Bay- near the center of the bay on the beach, by a lantern, barrels, and other debris
Lost and Found
Crescent Isle- enter the tunnel that leads to caves, the journal is near the north cave entrance
A New Flag to Fly
Daggertooth- by the campfire on the beach in front of the Gold Hoarder’s tent
A Strange Voyage
Reaper’s Hideout- head west from the building’s entrance, the journal is on the ground in front of a large rock
An Unexpected Ending
Reaper’s Hideout- on the pier at the East side

Galleon’s Grave Outpost- on a barrel on the main dock
It Never Rains
Golden Sands Outpost- on the West shore by wrecked rowboats

Old Faithful Isle- At the highest peak of the island, on a rock by some barrels with a lit lantern next to it

Plunder Outpost- near the rowboat campfire by the Gold Hoarder’s tent

Castaway Isle- in the sand on the North end of the island

Crook’s Hollow- by the cannons at the top of the island

Sharkbait Cove- in Merrick’s old camp on the west end of the island (look near the portrait of Merrick and Derrick)

Discovery Ridge- by a campfire on the western most island
