Ashen Treasures is a set of challenges focused around discovering hidden Tomes locked away by skeletons, and defeating those that guard them. This includes defeating skeleton Key Masters and Ashen Guardians to discover their Ashen Keys and Ashen Chests and unlock their Tomes, which you can learn about in our Guide to Ashen Treasures pt. 1.

This Guide is about new challenges and rewards that have been added to Ashen Treasures in update 2.0.10 “The Festival of Giving”, which focus on a trio of Skeleton Lords that are organizing the Ashen skeletons from Skull Forts (This includes 305 Doubloons and 1 new Title to earn), and in update 2.0.11 “The Legends of the Sea”, which added the Tomes of Fire to Ashen Chests, and finally update 2.0.12 “Crews of Rage”, which added the Tomes of Resurrection.

What’s New in Ashen Treasures?

  • New Volumes of Tomes — The Tomes of Power, Tomes of Fire, and Tomes of Resurrection — are being protected by the skeletons. Ashen Chests will now contain either a random 1 of the 5 Tomes of Power, Fire, Resurrection, OR Curses, and have a chance of containing multiple. Each Tome unlocks a Cosmetic Item
Chests taken from Molten Sands Fortress during the Crews of Rage event are guaranteed a Tome of Resurrection, while other chests have an equal chance of containing any Tome.
  • Three sinister new Skeleton Lords have emerged on the seas. You can encounter them with the time limited Gift Seeker Voyages that are available from December 11th-Mid January, as well as during the newly improved Ashen Skull Fort Battles. There are commendation rewards for defeating these Lords

Tomes of Power

When using an Ashen Key to open an Ashen Chest, you may discover one of five Tomes of Power. Selling this item to the Bilge Rat in any Tavern nets you 5 doubloons, plus unlocks commendations and Ashen Dragon Cosmetics. You can read more about how to find and open Ashen Chests in our Guide to Ashen Treasures pt 1.

You can find the Ashen Dragon Cosmetics in their own tab in the Bilge Rat’s Black Market (in the tavern), or at the appropriate shop on the outpost. Here are the latest pieces added in The Festival of Giving update:

  • Ashen Dragon Spyglass (Sell Tome of Power I)
  • Ashen Dragon Compass (Sell Tome of Power II)
  • Ashen Dragon Shovel (Sell Tome of Power III)
  • Ashen Dragon Bucket (Sell Tome of Power IV)
  • Ashen Dragon Fishing Rod (Sell Tome of Power V)
  • Ashen Dragon Flintlock (Sell all 5 Tomes of Power)

In addition, there are permanent commendations to be earned by selling these Tomes, earning you 15 Doubloons each (75 Doubloons Total). Once you’ve sold all 5 Tomes of Power, you’ll earn 50 Doubloons and a new title: “Scholar of Power”.

Tomes of Fire

Similar to the Tomes of Curses and Power, yet more Tomes have been added into the random pool of Ashen Chest loot possibilities. Tomes of Resurrection

Ashen Skull Forts

Marked by an ominous red Skull shaped cloud, these Fort battles are tougher than before, as the “captain wave” of the battle has been fleshed out into multiple waves:

  • First Captain: Like a regular skeleton Captain, drops a Stronghold Skull when defeated
  • Penultimate Wave: contains a Key Master (who drops an Ashen Key and Villainous Skull when defeated) and an Ashen Guardian (who drops a Villainous Skull and a map to dig up an Ashen Chest on the Fort when defeated)
  • Skeleton Lord: the final wave, featuring a battle between one of three new Skeleton Lords (more on them below). Defeating them will drop a villainous skull, a map to dig up Humble/Generous Gifts on the Fort, and the Stronghold Key to open the vault full of loot at the base of the Fort

In addition to the usual loot you expect, you’ll also find Ashen Chest(s) and Humble/Generous Gifts in the Vault. You can read about Humble/Generous Gifts and what to do with them in our Gift Seeker Voyages Guide

Skeleton Lords

Three new Skeleton Lords have been added as encounters in the game- The Mutinous Helmsman, The Two-Faced Scoundrel, and The Duchess. Each offers their own preferred attack pattern, but use the same general attacks we’ve seen past Skeleton Lords exhibit (gun switching, summon skeleton enemies, teleport to safety, earthquake slam).

Where can I fight them?

In addition to the final wave of an Ashen Skull Fort, the new skeleton lords also emerge during the limited time “Gift Seeker Voyages” that are available from December 11th through mid-January. The Mutinous Helmsman will attack during the regional Gift Seeker Voyages, while the Duchess and Two-Faced Scoundrel will both attack during the Legendary Gift Seeker Voyages.

The lords you face during Gift Seeker Voyages are weaker than you’ll find during a full blown Skull Fort battle, BUT if the entire crew dies simultaneously during a the fight on the Gift Seeker voyage, the Skeleton Lords will escape and you’ll miss your chance to defeat them.

Skeleton Lord Commendations

These Lords are here to stay and may even see a greater presence in the future, as the Ashen Treasures Tab contains long term goals to defeat them many times.

For EACH of the three Skeleton Lords, you receive 10 Doubloons for defeating them once, 20 Doubloons for defeating them 10 times, and 30 Doubloons for defeating them 25 times. That’s 180 Doubloons, and 75 Skeleton Lord battles… better stock up on lots of fruit.

And That’s it!
The limited time Gift Seeker Voyages are the fastest way to encounter these skeleton lords, so better do those while they’re available (December 11th through Mid January). There’s still more Ashen Dragon items yet to be revealed, so expect more Ashen Treasures commendations and more dark Tomes in the months ahead!
