Two of the largest permanent changes coming in the September update are the inclusion of new shop fronts, offering a way to obtain cosmetics old and new. This keeps the game fresh with regular cosmetic additions every month across both of the two new platforms. One of these deals in Gold and Doubloons, and the latter introduces a Premium Currency, Ancient Coins, to Sea of Thieves.

Duke’s Black Market

Duke the Bilge Rat has set up the Black Market, a place to purchase cosmetics new and old which you can access by talking to him in any of the game’s Taverns (where you first spawn in). Duke’s cosmetic inventory comes in two varieties: variations on past limited time items (for Doubloons), and variations on existing shop items (for Gold).
The Black Market cosmetic items will change with each monthly update, but items will return at some point in the future.

Doubloons

Bilge Rat Doubloons are a special currency in Sea of Thieves which can only be spent in Duke’s shop. They allow you to purchase some of his cosmetics, bags of regular gold, and even “Letters of Recommendation” which increase your Reputation one level in any of the five trading companies.

Starting from the September 11th update Letters of Recommendation will be limited to one purchase per company per month.

You can earn Doubloons by completing challenges or “commendations” from events in game. Here’s a collection of guides on previous events and which rewards you can still earn.

Duke’s Current Inventory

From September 11th to October 16th, the Black Market contains:

Desirables For Doubloons

The Fearless Bone Crusher
Hull (100)
Flag (25)
Sails (100)
Jacket (100)

Goodies for Gold

The Pirate Emporium

This new enterprise is the game’s Post-Launch Monetization. The Pirate Emporium allows you to purchase exclusive cosmetic-only items, including Pets, new Emotes, and ship cosmetic sets based on other popular video games. Everything in the Pirate Emporium costs Ancient Coins to purchase, which are a new premium currency.

Ancient Coins

Ancient Coins can be acquired in two ways:

  1. Purchased using real world currency from the Emporium menu:
Prices above in American Dollars, rates will vary in other regions

2. Earned by defeating the rare “Ancient Skeleton” found in game. This skeleton has a small chance of rising from the ground in both Adventure and Arena mode, and will immediately turn and run away. After some time it will return to the Earth and you’ll have missed out- but if you manage to kill it before then you receive a random amount of Ancient Coins

How to Access the Emporium

There are two places to access the Pirate Emporium shop. First, from the front end “main menu”, you’ll see the shop in the upper right hand corner. Additionally, you can enter the physical shop itself and buy everything it offers while in game in Adventure mode: just look out for the outpost flags depicting ancient coins and go up the stairs above any Order of Souls booth.

Pets

The Pirate Emporium is the only place to purchase your piratey animal companions, but luckily these aren’t limited time. A separate tab in the shop lets you access the Pet options, which currently include Monkeys (Capuchins and Barbaries) and Parrots (Macaws and Parakeets), each in a variety of colors. Once you purchase a pet you can access and purchase from a selection of outfits for them as well.

Pet Outfits (249 AC)

You can access your pet from the new “Pet Chest” found on the ship as well as outside the Emporium shop. From there you can select one pet, select their outfit, and input a name for your Pet (which can be changed as many times as you want!). Once you do this the pet will wander around the ship and follow you to shore, sharing in your adventure like a member of your crew!
