Challenges through August and September
With Sea of Thieves’ August Update being a smaller bug fixing update before a much bigger September Update on the horizon, the team at Rare have cooked up some different ways to keep players engaged through 11 challenges. It’s called Summer of Sea of Thieves, and here you’ll find everything you need to know.
Time Limited Event
Summer of Sea of Thieves lasts from August 19th to September 30th at 23:59 UTC. That’s 42 Days from the time of writing, so better get kraken!

Rewards
Summer of Sea of Thieves is a series of Challenge Sets, each containing four tasks for a total of 44 tasks! These are linked to earning rewards in a number of ways:
1. Gold and Doubloons
Completing any single task in any Challenge Set will earn you 1000 gold, and 10 doubloons. Not bad!
2. Titles
Completing all 4 tasks in a Challenge Set will earn an exclusive Title, for 11 total Titles to earn and show off!
3. Cosmetics
There are Twelve exclusive Cosmetic items in the Courage Set, but earning them is very straightforward — simply complete ANY 3 tasks from ANY Challenge Set to earn one of the Cosmetics. For every 3 you complete, you’ll earn the next item, meaning to get all 12 items you only need to complete 36/44 tasks!
You can skip 8/44 tasks and still earn every cosmetic item, only missing out on Titles
Note: the Boots of Courage were available previously in the “Competition of Courage” Event. The “Let’s Go!” and “Pay Respects” emotes were available in the Twitch Prime Pirate Pack available late last year, and are also for Sale in the Pirate Emporium “Competitive Emote Bundle”
Below, I’ve regrouped the various tasks for an easier time keeping track. I’ve grouped up tasks by specific islands they can be completed at, tasks that require other pirates, tasks that must be played in The Arena, etc. This will help keep track of what there is to do!
General Tasks
The Challenge Set that each task is from is marked in [Brackets]
By Location:
- Any Outpost: Talk to the Mysterious Stranger in the Tavern [Meet the Locals]
- Any Outpost: Talk to Duke in the Tavern [Meet the Locals]
- Plunder Outpost: Talk to Madame Olivia at the Order of Souls [Meet the Locals]
- Morrow’s Peak Outpost: Talk to Captain Grace Morrow outside the Tavern [Meet the Locals]
- Morrow’s Peak Outpost: Talk to Tellulah in the Tavern [Meet the Locals]
- Sea Dog’s Tavern at K11: Talk to Amarantha at the Tavern Doors [Meet the Locals]
- Sea Dog’s Tavern at K11: Complete the “Parkour Course” and ring the bell [Be More Daring]
(You don’t have to actually climb the course- a ladder next to the tavern doors will lead up to the bell, and ringing it completes the challenge) - Lagoon of Whispers: Talk to Umbra [Meet the Locals]
- Ferry of the Damned: Talk to the Ferryman [Meet the Locals]
- Reaper’s Hideout: Talk to the Servant of the Flame [Meet the Locals]
Easy Tasks
These are tasks you can quickly do while playing an Adventure Mode session without going far out of the way
- Cook food on a Campfire at Night [Stay Healthy]
- Eat all 5 types of Fruit (banana, coconut, pomegranate, mango, pineapple [Stay Healthy]
- Explode a chain reaction of at least two Gun Powder carrying Skeletons [Spread Mischief]
- Drop the anchor while in a full turn [Spread Mischief]
- Drink Grog until you puke [Go Wild]
Dedicated Tasks
These are tasks that might take more planning to get done!
- Complete the Maiden Voyage (found on main menu screen) [Experience More]
- Kill 10 Skeletons affected by Grog Balls [Get Groggy]
Find Grog Balls in random barrels, lure skeletons to the beach, fire the Grog Ball from the cannon to affect the skellies, then fire regular cannonballs to kill them (or have a crew mate rush in with their cutlass) - Deliver 20 Trophy Fish to the Hunter’s Call [Win a Trophy]
- Defeat either a Megalodon/Skeleton Ship/Kraken/Ghost Fleet/Ashen Lord [Experience More]
- Defeat an Ashen Lord [Be More Daring]
(head to a randomly spawning Fire Tornado on the horizon) - Clear the Fort of the Damned [Go Wild]
- Reach Athena’s Fortune Emissary Grade 5 [Reignite the Legend] (Pirate Legend Only)
Tasks that Require Other Crew’s Pirates
8 of the 44 tasks require interaction with Other Crews, meaning you could skip all these tasks if you only cared about getting all 12 cosmetic items. However, 5 of the Challenge Sets require these tasks, so 5 of the exclusive titles require inter-crew interaction. Here’s a check list for when you run into another crew on the seas (with the Challenge Set marked in [Brackets]:
- Make a Friend: using the “Make a friend” Emote in front of another pirate, add them to your friends list [Make New Friends]
NOTE: You can accomplish this task with someone in your own crew as well! You can even Unfriend your crewmate, then refriend each other with the emote to complete this challenge!
- Play a Shanty: play a shanty along with a member of another crew [Make New Friends]
- Give a Chest: have another crew sell one of your chests (if you can’t find another crew, simply leave chests lying next to the sell point on outposts and wait for crews to discover them) [Make New Friends]
- Alliance: form an alliance with another crew [Play Together]
- Skeleton Thrones: use the sit emote together with another crew’s pirate on a Large Skeleton Throne. These are located on Plunder Outpost (way high up), Shipwreck Bay (north-east on a rock), Cannon Cove (launch onto the large central rock), north-west of Smuggler’s Bay (on a rock formation at sea), or Marauder’s Arch (way high up, need to launch from cannons) [Play Together]
- Drink in the Tavern: get drunk in the Tavern with another crew’s pirate [Get Groggy]
- Reaper’s Bones attack!: as a Reaper’s Bones Emissary, sell another crew’s Grade 5 emissary flag [Win a Trophy]
- Give an Athena’s Chest: let another crew cash in your Chest of Legends [Reignite the Legend] (Pirate Legend Only)
Arena Tasks
There are 20 tasks that require entering the Sea Dogs Arena mode, meaning you can’t get every cosmetic without earning some of these (you’ll need at least 12 of these tasks to get every cosmetic!). Also, every Challenge Set includes at least one Arena Task, meaning you can’t get any of the 11 Titles without playing in The Arena. If you’re headed into frenetic competition, here’s a checklist to keep you on task and completing these varied challenges (with the Challenge Set listed in [Brackets]:
Sea Dogs Tavern
- Speak to Demarco, Lesedi, and Dimitri: these three are standing in the Sea Dogs Tavern (the waiting area between matches), so make sure to say hello. [Meet the Locals]
- Hot Tubbing: get at least one member of every crew in the tavern hot tub [Play Together]
- Raise Tankard: raise The Glorious Sea Dog Tankard with 3 other pirates in the Hot Tub (this cosmetic item can be purchased by Anyone in the equipment shop!) [Get Groggy]
Arena-In Game
- Complete a Contest: simple as that- just finish a game in The Arena [Experience More]
- Top 3 Finishes: finish in the Top 3 in at least 3 Arena contests [Play Together]
- More Top 3 Finishes: finish in the Top 3 in 10 Arena contests [Win a Trophy]
- 4 Crew Shanty: Play a shanty on your ship with 4 pirates (easily achieved with a full Galleon crew) [Make New Friends]
- Shipshape: Repair 3 holes in your ship in The Arena [Stay Healthy]
- Fire at Will: fire 50 cannonball shots in The Arena- doesn’t matter if they hit anything [Go Wild]
- Boarding Denied: Defeat a pirate that boarded your ship in The Arena [Stay Healthy]
- Drop their Anchor: board another ship and drop their anchor [Spread Mischief]
- Blunderbuss: kill an enemy pirate with the Blunderbuss [Spread Mischief]
- Vicious Pirate: kill 20 total pirates in The Arena [Win a Trophy]
Cannonball Kills don’t count! It must be by your sword or firearm - Dig Up Chests: dig up 3 total buried chests in the Arena [Go Wild]
- Sell a Chest: cash in a chest in the Arena [Experience More]
- Sell a Chest Quickly: cash in a chest in The Arena in the first 5 minutes of a contest [Be More Daring]
- Sell a Chest…Drunk: cash in a chest while drunk. Easiest way is to walk the chest to the turn-in point, then down a grog before selling the chest! [Get Groggy]
- Sell a Stolen Chest: cash in a chest that another crew dug up [Be More Daring]
- Legends Only: Win a contest as a Pirate Legend [Reignite the Legend] (Pirate Legend Only)
- Legends Only: In Arena, fire out of a cannon and land on an enemy ship [Reignite the Legend] (Pirate Legend Only)
To Summarize, there’s 44 challenges in 11 sets of 4. Complete a challenge for gold and doubloons, complete a set to earn a Title, and complete ANY three challenges to earn a cosmetic item, all the way up to 12 unique cosmetic items!
Many of these tasks are simple and will take no time at all, while some will take special effort and planning- good luck, and we’ll see you on the seas!
