Technology has played the biggest part in mankind’s progression through history. In the last century, we have seen a big boom in electronics and companies going digital; using online storage and databases for their personal files and information. Although this has been ground-breaking, it has also opened the door for a new form of threat to emerge: hacking.

We have seen an increase in cyberterrorism and greater amounts of confidential files being leaked but there are two sides to it as hacking can be advantageous to companies as well as detrimental. There are three types of hackers: White Hats, Black Hats and Grey Hats. White hats are hackers that are hired by companies to try and infiltrate their security systems and show how they can be improved to be more secure. Conversely, Black Hats hack for malicious purposes, either to gain access to classified documents or to perform illegal activities.

One of the most recent and prominent hacks was the Sony hack of 2014. This hack, which was believed to have been perpetrated by agents working for Kim Jong Un, saw thousands of Sony executive’s personal emails and documents being uploaded for the public to view. Later in the year, both Sony and Microsoft were hacked by a group calling themselves Lizard Squad which caused all of their online gaming servers to crash.

There is always some bad that comes along with the progressing of technology but the advances are of greater benefit than the bad.
