Dear Democrats: Please don’t blow this

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi struggles to get up off the floor of the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center

June 16, 2020

It has been a great few days for liberals in America. With a landmark decision at the Supreme Court championing LGBTQ rights, a raft of polling showing Joe Biden kicking Donald Trump’s ass in every swing state and leading by double digits nationwide and the chances growing that Mitch McConnell and the confederate statues he is saving will be removed from places of power in the Capitol, I was feeling great.

So why then is the image that sticks the most in my mind from politics in the last week the image of Nancy Pelosi, draped in pathetically pandering kente cloth, struggling to get up off of the floor of the Capitol building?

It is a perfect metaphor for the Democratic Party leadership: trying to do the right thing, but led by really old people more focused on symbolism than solutions and perilously close to allowing disaster. We have no time for cheap stunts as a country (here’s looking at you Eliot Engel) — we have a still-raging pandemic, a wave of police brutality, an economic depression and a racist president openly supporting a modern version of the confederacy.

America has an addle-minded tyrant for a president. We have a vice president openly lying to the country about a plague-like virus. We have an attorney general who has been exposed as a flaming racist wanting to restart the execution chambers of the federal government to kill more black people. We have a senator from Texas more interested in fighting Hellboy than dealing with mass illness in his state.

Meanwhile, Democrats are waffling on choosing a vice presidential nominee. Will it be Susan Rice, who would be tarred and feathered as the Queen of Benghazi by the right? Or will it be the delusional Stacey Abrams, who has never won a statewide election but wants to be the next leader of the free world?

With the current lethal ineptitude and blatant racism of the executive branch and U.S. Senate, Democrats have an opportunity to take control of the House, Senate and White House for the first time since 2010. Remember back then? They passed a law that gave healthcare to millions of people. Imagine what we could accomplish this time. Not only can we rebuild America post-Trump, we can chart a new course for the country.

But first, we as Democrats have to not blow it — treat this election like the moral imperative that it is, make smart decisions and keep up the hard work in the last 140 days before election day.
