The full guide for the new Editor with Markdown in Gooba 3.1

Mar 13, 2019 · 4 min read

We have recently released the biggest update of Gooba 3 on the App Store. We have added many improvements and, certainly, the most interesting feature is the new Editor for notes with Markdown support. We can therefore define Gooba from now on as a writing app and no longer a simple app to take notes.

In this post, of the category “How to learn Gooba”, we want to provide you with all the basics to use Gooba 3.1 with the new Editor. We recommend that you save this page as a favorite, as it may be useful in the future.
Let’s start from the basic things, for example many of you do not know the Markdown. Don’t worry, we are here to explain everything you need to know. Let’s start!

What is the Markdown?

Markdown logo

Markdown is one of the most famous markup languages. A markup language is a set of rules that allow us to describe the text and, therefore, its formatting. HTML is also a markup language, for example.

But what are these rules? For example with the Markdown to insert a header, before the text, we must insert the character ‘#’. So it is as if we were saying: “After the character #, the following text is a heading”.

Let’s find out all the simple rules of Markdown available in Gooba 3.1.

The rules of the Markdown

• #Heading 1: the text inserted after the character ‘#’ is a Title.

##Heading 2: the text inserted after the characters ‘##’ is a subtitle.

• **bold text**: the text between four asterisks ‘****’ will be marked as ‘bold’.

• *text*: the text between two asterisks ‘**’ will be marked as ‘italic’.

• [Link]( a link consists of a title (written between the characters ‘[]’) and a web address (written between the characters ‘()’).

• `let str = "Hello world"`: you can add a line of code by inserting the text between the characters ‘``’.

The Markdown is a very simple markup language, and you just need a few days to fully understand its operation.

The new buttons

When you write with the new Editor on Gooba 3.1, you will notice new buttons above the keyboard. Thanks to them it will be possible to avoid the rules described above. In fact, it is not necessary for you to write the rules of the Markdown, because Gooba will do it for you.

For example, if you wanted to write text in bold you can just press the B button and everything you write from now on will be in bold.

Or you can make the selected text in bold. It’s simple: once you have selected the text, just click on the B button.

The buttons available:

B: Bold

i: Italic

• Link

H1: Heading 1

H2: Heading 2

• <>: Code line

Keyboard shortcuts on the iPad

If you use the iPad with an external keyboard, when writing on Gooba, you can simplify some operations and make writing more pleasant.

Thanks to the new shortcuts added with Gooba 3.1 it is as if you were writing with a computer.

⌘1: Heading 1

⌘2: Heading 2

⌘B: Bold text

⌘I: Italic text

⌘W: Link

⇧⌘C: Code line

⌘Z: Undo

• ⇧⌘Z: Redo

Export with new formats

With Gooba 3.1 we have added two new formats for exporting notes, Markdown and HTML format. And we have improved the export to PDF files.

When you export your notes to one of these formats, the file will completely respect the formatting you have provided during writing.

To export a note, just click on the Share button at the top right and choose the desired format.

Choice of font and size

In Gooba 3.1 we added a new font called Menlo. Try it now!

As we said earlier, we recommend that you save this guide as a bookmark so that you can consult it whenever you have a doubt.
