FCA India to Recall 1,200 Jeep Compass Units over Faulty Airbags
FCA India has announced its decision to recall 1,200 units of its hot-selling Jeep Compass SUV, owing to a potentially hazardous front passenger air bag. This decision comes on the back of a larger recall by its parent company in the US, which is recalling 7,000 vehicles produced between September 5 and November 19.
According to a statement released by FCA, one of its suppliers alerted it to the possibility that loose fasteners may have inadvertently found their way into a small number of airbag modules during the assembly process. Consequently, the company warned that the loose fasteners might pose a safety hazard in the event of the front passenger air bag being deployed.
While the company has said that it is unaware of any related injuries or complaints, it has advised customers with affected vehicles to refrain from the using the front passenger seat until the problem is rectified. In the coming weeks FCA India will initiate the recall process and have dealers directly contact customers to arrange for a free replacement.
This news is perhaps the first setback for the Indian-made Compass, which has enjoyed a strong response since launching in July. The Compass received 10,000 bookings within two months of its launch and more than 8,000 units have been delivered till date.
