Ford India have finally taken the wraps off their much publicized “crossover utility vehicle”, the Freestyle. Based on the Figo hatchback, the Freestyle gets a number of design, performance and technology upgrades to create an SUV-like feel.

Externally, the Freestyle has all the usual elements one would expect from a crossover such as a new front grille with three-dimensional mesh design, skid plates on the front and rear, roof rails, extensive body cladding and larger 185/60 R15 alloy wheels to go with a best in class ground clearance of 190mm. While the car looks aggressive, it does not differentiate itself significantly from the Figo. Whether customers are sufficiently impressed with the new styling elements to look past this fact will be interesting to see.

In terms of space, the legroom and headroom are among the best in the segment. The Freestyle also comes with 20 storage spaces throughout the cabin and a boot with a capacity of 257 litres.

Also making its debut with the Freestyle is Ford’s all-new 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Dragon series petrol engine that produces 96 PS of peak power and 120 Nm of torque. Customers also have the option of opting for the 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 100 PS and 215 Nm. Both engines are mated to a new lightweight 5-speed manual transmission aimed at delivering a sportier and more economical ride.

The Freestyle comes features a new suspension with increased track-width and a number of technologies including segment-firsts such as Hill Launch Assist and Active Rollover Protection to deliver a SUV-like driving experience. Additional safety features include traction control and ABS with EBD. Dual airbags are standard across all variants while the top-end comes with six airbags.

On the inside, the highlight is Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment system with a 6.5" touchscreen equipped with navigation, voice control and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Freestyle also comes with a number of convenience features such as a reverse parking camera, push button start, automatic climate control and keyless entry.

The Freestyle is available in six colours including the new White Gold, Canyon Ridge, Absolute Black, Oxford White, Moondust Silver and Smoke Grey. The petrol and diesel variants start at Rs. 5.09 Lakh and Rs. 6.09 Lakh and go upto Rs. 6.94 Lakh and Rs. 7.89 Lakh (ex-showroom, India), respectively.

Given the competitive pricing and the wide range of features on offer, the Freestyle could be an extremely popular option for both hatchback and crossover fans. Head over to CarPal to check out the latest prices, request a test drive or be among the first owners of the first ever CUV from Ford!
