Marking its 5th anniversary in India, LAND ROVER has launched a limited edition variant of its most affordable SUV, The Freelander 2. This variant is better known as the Sterling Edition, and gets a range of cosmetic upgrades which make the brands poster car more visually appealing.

The Freelander 2 is one of the most versatile SUVs in the world and quite comfortably sets the benchmark for its segment. It is just as comfortable off the road as it is on it, which is more than what can be said for many SUVs in the market.

The global replacement for the Freelander 2, the LAND ROVER DISCOVERY Sport, was unveiled on the 2nd of September; this might be the last release of the Freelander in India.
The Freelander 2 has been around for quite some time but is still one of the best smaller side of SUVs that you can get your hands on. It also received minor upgrades in 2013.

THE STERLING EDITION-
This is the limited edition variant of the Freelander 2, but upgrades have been restricted to cosmetic changes alone. These include new 17 inch five split spoke alloy wheels with anthracite finish, dark atlas grille, fender and side vents, front and rear apron and lower door claddings; in addition, it sports a tailgate spoiler and an enhanced tailpipe.

The interiors and engine see no change from the normal Freelander 2 SE. It runs on the same 2.2 litre turbocharged diesel motor that churns out 147.5 bhp along with a maximum torque of 420Nm. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all the four wheels.

PRICE- The sterling edition has been launched with a price of 44.41 lakhs (ex-showroom Mumbai).

“We are excited to introduce the new Freelander 2 Sterling Edition. It will further endear the hugely popular model to our young and sophisticated customers looking to own an exclusive Land Rover with enhanced sporty look” said the optimistic Mr.Rohit Suri, VP, JLR India.

The Sterling Edition for sure does make the ageing Freelander 2 more appealing. It is the most capable off roader in its class and has the backing of the Land Rover’s off road pedigree. The Discovery Sport will replace the Freelander 2 across the globe, so this might be JLR’s last attempt to make the Freelander more attractive and sell a few more units before it’s put out to pasture. Only a limited number of these new cars will be produced, so go ahead and make your bookings in if you’re impressed by this upgrade !
