The much awaited model from the Indo-Japanese automaker the ‘Maruti Suzuki Ignis’ is set for launch on 13th January 2017 in India, while its e-bookings will start earlier next month via Nexa. It was first unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo motor show followed by its Indian premiere at the Auto Expo 2016.

The car flaunts a hot shot bold look with its boxy headlamps, broad grille, clam shell bonnet ,U-shaped LED daytime running lamps and thumping wheel arches instilling a sense of ambiguity whether it should be a hatchback or a crossover? Interestingly the carmaker has claimed it to be a Premium Urban Compact car that carries the DNA of an SUV equipped with latest technology and key features. More than a new model ,its completely a new segment for the automaker which has only been previously occupied by the Mahindra KUV 100 till now. Ignis is set to replace the Maruti Suzuki Ritz and to lock horns with the KUV100. The car will be placed below the Baleno and Swift in its product hierarchy and above Wagon-R and Celerio.

The Ignis being a premium offering, comes with LED daytime-running lamps, a touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, smartphone connectivity and Apple CarPlay, dual airbags and ABS, reverse camera and parking sensors.

The tried & tested 1.2-Litre K-series Petrol and 1.3-Litre DDIS Diesel engines with both the powertrains borrowed from the Baleno will power the Ignis. The petrol engine churns out a decent 83 bhp and 115 Nm of Torque whereas the diesel produces 73.9 bhp and 190 Nm peak Torque. Interestingly, both the engines will be available with a 5 speed manual and AMT gearbox options. The car comes in with a range of single tone colours in addition with three dual tone shades — Blue-White, Blue-Black, Red-Black.

The car is expected to be priced between 5–7 lakhs providing a stiff competition for the existing crossovers such as the Chevrolet Beat, Hyundai i20 Active and Toyota Etios Cross etc.
