Maruti has successfully tested the sedan with a 1.5L diesel engine. The company claims that this test is the first step towards making the Ciaz more competitive.
Currently, the Ciaz is powered by a FIAT sourced 89 HP/200 Nm 1.3L 4-cylinder diesel which is the smallest and least powerful engine available in the segment. With the new 1.5L engine developed in-house, Maruti would not be required pay huge loyalties to Fiat for it’s current engines.
In addition to this, a 1.5L petrol engine is likely to be developed and could replace the 89 HP 1.4L engine.
These new engines are likely to be launched with the Ciaz in 2018.
