Suzuki Motors has achieved a new milestone in its journey in India by producing 2,00,00,000 cars in India. The 20 millionth car produced is the 2018 Swift at the Gujarat plant.

India becomes the second country after Japan to reach this milestone where Suzuki took 45 years and 9 months in Japan, thus India being the fastest country to reach 20 million units in just 34 years and 5 months since starting production in December 1983. Of the 20 million units, Alto was the most produced model with approximately 3.17 million units followed by Maruti 800 with 2.91 million units, WagonR with 2.13 million units, Omni with 1.94 million units and Swift with 1.94 million units.

Production at the Gujarat plant commenced in December 1983 with the Maruti 800 by Maruti Udyog (currently Maruti Suzuki). By March 1994, 1 million cars were produced in India. The production number reached 5 million units in April 2005, and then doubling to 10 million units in March 2011. The 15 millionth unit was rolled out in May 2015 with the next 5 million taking just 3 years.

Today, production is done at the Gurgaon and Manesar Plants of Maruti Suzuki, as well as Gujarat Plant of Suzuki Motor Gujarat, Suzuki’s 100% subsidiary to produce automobiles in India contributing to both India’s needs as well as exporting to over 100 countries.
