Toyota Camry Hybrid to be launched in September 2013
The Toyota Camry Hybrid is the next big product launch expected from the Toyota stable. Toyota Kirloskar Motors has been quite silent about their products for a while now showing signs of impact from the market slowdown.
The Camry Hybrid comes at a good time when the indian automobile market is opening up to the reaches of electric vehicles and hybrids. With perceptions about such vehicles changing fast, thanks to frequent changes in fuel prices, it can be confidently assumed that the car will be accepted well.
Our friends at IndianAutosBlog have good reasons to believe that Toyota can be eyeing a mid September 2013 launch with promotional events starting later this month.
The Camry is not the only hybrid vehicle Toyota sells in India. The Prius was introduced a few years ago to a feeble response and acceptance. The heavy price tag discouraged sales and only the environment enthusiasts who had a bank balance of close to Rs. 25 lakhs found the liking for it.
The reason for having the Prius, one of the cheapest and most reliable cars to buy in the United States, priced at Rs. 25 lakhs was the fact that it was not home-assembled and had to be imported (CBUs) and the government did not support any tax redemption for eco-friendly cars.
It is a good guess that the Camry, just like the Prius, will be a completely imported vehicle and import taxes can result in a heavy price tag. The regular Camry is priced at around Rs. 25 lakhs Ex-showroom, New Delhi. With similar taxation situations prevailing, we can foresee a Hybrid version, fully imported, to bear a price tag of Rs. 35–40 Lakhs.
