After much hype and anticipation, Toyota India have finally launched the Yaris sedan in the country at a starting price of Rs. 8.79 Lakh (ex-showroom). Featuring a stylish design, a number of segment-first features and a strong reputation in overseas markets, the Yaris looks a worthy contender in the highly competitive sedan segment long dominated by the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna

The Yaris has an appealing exterior and features a number of stylish design elements including high mounted projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, sporty front grille and wraparound tail lamps. Coming in at 4.2m long, 1.7m wide and 1.5m tall, the Yaris is slightly shorter than the Honda City, but wider.

The Yaris will initially be available only with a 108hp, 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a CVT. Considering the relative unpopularity of diesels in the segment, this seems like a sensible move by Toyota.

Apart from the looks, potential customers will be most looking forward to the features and interiors offered on the Yaris. Toyota have made a significant leap from the Etios and made a conscious effort to provide high quality interiors and features in order to compete with City and Verna. The Yaris will come with a number of segment-first features including roof-mounted rear AC vents, touchscreen infotainment system with gesture control, tyre pressure monitoring system, front parking sensors and powered driver’s seat.

The Yaris is decked out with safety features as well including all-wheel disc brakes, seven airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP and hill start assist. With such extensive safety features, Toyota will be hoping to woo customers particularly keen on ensuring the safest ride possible.

The base J variant of the Yaris starts at Rs. 8.75 Lakhs and goes upto Rs. 12.85 Lakhs for the top-spec VX variant. The CVT option for each variant is priced at an additional Rs. 1.2 Lakhs. The pricing of the sedan is more or less in the same territory as its major rivals and whether the combination of looks and features will be enough to entice car buyers will be interesting to see.
