For the past several months now I’ve been tackling a set of personal ‘missions’ each month, mostly focused around health, productivity & growth.

At the start of August I created this month’s set of ‘missions’ to complete every single day — no exceptions.

Here’s what happened.

The Missions

In August I set out to achieve these 8 things every single day:

Wake up at 5:41am. Done

Go for a long walk after getting up. Done

Do 100 push-ups. Done

Do a mobility & stretching routine for 15mins. Done

Complete all 3 activity rings on my Apple Watch. Done

Read a physical book for at least 30mins. Done

Write in a logbook about the previous day. Done

No email or social media before 10am. Better this month!

The Results

Overall I think August had some good improvements over previous months. Here’s what happened in some more detail:

Wake up at 5:41am. Done. Every single day.

Go for a long walk after getting up. Done. Same route. Same time. No exceptions.

Do 100 push-ups. Done. I typically completed with sets of 15–20 throughout the day.

Do a mobility & stretching routine for 15mins. Done. Managed to stick to a consistent routine on this during the month and mostly focused on my legs and back. At the end of the month I’ve really noticed an improvement in flexibility and general mobility.

Complete all 3 rings on my Apple Watch. Done.

Read a physical book for at least 30mins. Done. Like last month I decided to take my time with my reading and so got through a few less books than previous months.

Discipline Equals Freedom — Jocko Willink. (Read for the eighth time).

The Hard Thing About Hard Things — Ben Horowitz.

Made to Stick — Chip Heath & Dan Heath.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing — Al Ries & Jack Trout.

Man’s Search for Meaning — Viktor Frankl. (A truly great read).

My top two this month…Made to Stick and Man’s Search for Meaning.

Write in a logbook about the previous day. Done. Although I did some amount of journaling I found myself getting slack about what I was writing during the month. It wasn’t a great month for other reasons and I kind of lost my drive to write anything meaningful or insightful each day.

No email or social media before 10am. I was pretty good about this in August without being 100% perfect.

The Future

I’ve decided to suspend this ‘missions’ concept for now (at least the blog posting aspect of it). I will continue with a lot of these daily habits of course because they’re now so engrained but I want to focus on some other priorities. Maybe the concept will come back in another form later on!

Regardless of what happens I know that getting up early, doing some consistent exercise, eating really well, and reading books will be part of what I do for a very long time.

‘Missions is a special project I started in December 2017 (and completed in August 2018). Little daily challenges, completed every month.
