So many people today have children living lives we never imagined they would. We all have great hopes for our children to be blessed, happy, and successful. Who doesn’t want their child to have things we didn’t have, do things we couldn’t do, and go places we didn’t go?

I know I’m not alone in having a grown child living a life that breaks my heart. Too many baby boomers have children suffering from addictions, mental illnesses, depression, and homelessness. We spoiled our kids rotten, didn’t make them work for or earn material possessions, and didn’t require them to follow through on commitments.

We unintentionally nurtured a belief that the world owed them something. We regret those mistakes, and there are no do-overs. We can’t turn back the pages, but we can pray that God will help them to write new ones. If you are like me, you have been hoping and praying for decades that your child’s life would improve.

Let me tell you a little about my prodigal son. He is 46 and lives in California in his car with his dog, a miniature dachshund. He has suffered from depression since he was a child. He was 14 when his therapist suggested…
