Perhaps I Should
A poem
I haven’t danced in the rain for ages.
Strolled through a sunlit park, shadows stretching long.
Traced the petals of a wildflower blooming,
watching clouds drift lazily across the sky.
I don’t lace my shoes up tight anymore.
I snag just one more slice of pie from the table,
he winks, “gotcha.”
Too long since I wiped the dust off my old journal,
the bicycle gliding through whispers of evening air.
Inhaled the earthy scent from a pot of fresh basil.
Won at chess, no tricks involved.
Tied a line with nimble fingers, warmth from the sun.
Chased fireflies in the thick of night,
watching their glow flicker, catch, and release,
only to dance away into the dark.
Polished the old harmonica, ready for tunes.
Loaded my backpack with trail maps and dreams,
preparing for a weekend in the woods.
It has been too long since I felt the breeze on my face,
the hum of cicadas filling my ears.
Shared stories with friends around a flickering flame.
I long to feel the ache in my legs, droplets cooling
as I climb higher under the azure sky.
So long since I walked barefoot on warm grass… Why?
It’s uplifting to know sitting here with my tea in hand,
so many joys await me.
Turn the pages of that novel waiting patiently.
Sit quietly in a bustling café,
watching the world spin in a dance of its own.
Perhaps I should just sit by the water’s edge and watch the
ripples kiss the shore, soak in the tranquility and savor
the taste of freedom.
