Pursuing your passion is never easy, especially when it conflicts with South Asian family expectations or a secure career path. Yet for some women, the choice to prioritize happiness over convention became a life-changing decision.

Choosing Faith Over Career

My cousin Olivia was a junior in college when she became seriously ill while vacationing in India. It took months for her to recover, and during that time, she realized that she had found her true calling.

She believed God had brought her back from death’s door for a reason, and that was to become a missionary. So she quit her computer science degree and dove into her newfound passion with great zeal.

Predictably, her parents, both educated professionals, criticized her decision. They tried to convince her to finish her degree and pursue a well-paying future. But she remained adamant.

Olivia eventually met another Christian missionary and moved to a remote part of North India, where they continue their work.

They are not rich, but that was never the goal. She’s happy with her choice, and I’m proud of her courage and determination…
